Questions people ask

Short answers. The guides go deeper.

How does the checker work?

When you hit Check it, our server visits the address once, the same way a browser would, and waits up to 8 seconds for an answer. It follows redirects, reads the response code, and turns the result into plain English. If you didn't type https:// and the secure version fails, it also tries plain http://.

It says the site is up, but it won't load for me. Why?

Then the site is working, and something between you and it isn't: your Wi-Fi, your browser, a stale DNS cache, a VPN, or a work or school filter. Try mobile data first, since it rules out half of those at once. The is-it-just-me guide goes through the rest in order.

Why does a big site say it "blocks automated checkers"?

Sites like Reddit, Etsy and Perplexity refuse requests that come from servers rather than people. They still answer (usually with a 403 code), and an answer means the site is running. So we show them as up, with a note, instead of crying wolf.

What's the difference between "down" and "doesn't exist"?

Down means there's a real website at that address and it's failing: no answer, a server error, or a broken security certificate. Doesn't exist means nothing is registered under that name at all. That's usually a typo, or a domain that expired.

What does "It's up, but something's wrong" mean?

The server is running but that particular page has a problem, like a 404 (page not found), or the site's security certificate is set up incompletely. Most visitors can still reach the main site. Try the home page address on its own.

Who can see the sites I check?

Only you. Your Recently Checked list is saved in your own browser, never on our servers, and the Clear history button wipes it. The website you check sees a visit from our server, not from you. The privacy policy has the details.

Can it watch a site and tell me when it goes down?

No. It checks once, when you ask. For alerts you need an uptime monitor, which checks every few minutes and texts or emails you. The uptime guide explains what to look for.

Can I check a site on my home or office network?

No. Addresses like 192.168.1.1, localhost or anything else on a private network are refused, so the tool can't be used to poke around inside someone's network. It only checks public websites.

We check from our own server. If a site is up here but won't load for you, the problem is on your side: your Wi-Fi, network, or browser.
